Gmail - The Best Free Email Service?

Gmail, or GoogleMail as they now prefer to call it, is Google's free email service.

It is a webmail service, so you can access it from any internet connected computer, anywhere in the world, or you can set it up to download your email onto your own computer (via POP or IMAP).

It is free to setup an account which gives you 5 gbs of online storage space. You can buy additional space if you need it.

You will be given a gmail.com or googlemail.com email address but you can also use your own domain name. I always recommend that people have their own domain name so they can easily change email service providers.

Overview:

  • Free email service with growing storage allowance
  • Simple user interface
  • You can easily search and order your emails
  • Access your emails from any internet computer
  • Good mobile phone interface so you can pick up emails when away from your PC
  • Good filters to help you archive, star, label, forward or delete messages
  • You can retrieve up to 5 POP accounts
  • You can choose what email address is inserted into sent emails
  • Connected to Google Talk so you can IM friends from the same page
  • You can include many attachment types (pdf, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc)
  • Good spam filter and virus scanning
  • Downside: Google Adsense ads are displayed to the right of your emails on the screen, but that is the 'cost'  you pay for free services

SubHub Opinion

I have a Gmail and Yahoo Mail account and they both have their advantages.

The reason why I have stuck with Gmail is for two reasons; first it integrates well with a whole suite of free Google services (calendar, reader, docs, etc) and second because the spam filter is much better than on other free webmail services. Everyone in our office has a gmail account.
